A COMPETITIVE RECRUITMENT EXAMINATION FOR

 

FIRE FIGHTER

 

The Toledo Civil Service Commission has announced the Fire Fighter examination. We will begin accepting formal applications on SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2008, and ending FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2008 on the dates and times listed below:

 

            8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. - Saturday, 3/29/08

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. - Monday through Friday, 3/31/08 to 4/11/08

            8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. – Thursday, 4/3/08 and Tuesday, 4/8/08

            9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Saturday, 4/5/08

 

WHERE TO APPLY:   All applications will be accepted by the Toledo Civil Service Commission staff on the First Floor of the Fire Administration Building located at 545 N. Huron Street in downtown Toledo.   NOTE:  NO PARKING IS ALLOWED IN FRONT OF THE FIRE BUILDING ON HURON STREET.

 If you completed an interest card for Fire Fighter, YOU MUST STILL COMPLETE A FORMAL CIVIL SERVICE APPLICATION CARD.  If you currently reside 50 miles or more from the City of Toledo, someone else may apply for you.
 At the time of application, you will receive study materials for the written examination.  APPLY EARLY SO YOU CAN BEGIN TO PREPARE FOR THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION.  You will also have the opportunity to sign-up for a test orientation session when you file your application.  These sessions will assist you in preparing for the written examination.  TEST ORIENTATION SESSIONS ARE FREE OF CHARGE.  NOTE:  The Toledo Civil Service Commission has no connection with, nor does it make any recommendations relative to, any school or individual offering courses in preparation for Civil Service tests, nor is it responsible for statements made by such individuals or schools.
 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 RESIDENCE:                         Must be a resident of the City of Toledo within six (6) months from date of appointment.

AGE:                                                   Applicants who will not be 18 years of age by Tuesday, April 29, 2008 and applicants who will be 35 years of age or older on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 will not be allowed to participate in this examination.

EDUCATION:            Graduation from high school or General Educational Development (GED) Tests equivalency at time of application.

OTHER:                                 The 2008 Fire Fighter eligible list will be used to hire Fire Fighters who are required to become Paramedics.  If you are hired as a Fire Fighter, you must take the required course work on your own time and receive your Paramedic Certificate within twelve (12) months from the date you graduate from the Toledo Fire Training Academy.  Extensions to the 12-month requirement shall be at the discretion of the Chief of the Toledo Department of Fire and Rescue Operations.  Once you receive your Paramedic Certificate, you must maintain your Paramedic certification and function as a Fire Fighter / Paramedic for the duration of your career with the Toledo Department of Fire and Rescue Operations.
VETERANS:                           If you believe that you are eligible to receive Veteran's points, bring a COPY of your DD-214 Form with you when you apply.  DD-214's submitted MUST show the type of military discharge received (either honorable or under honorable conditions) and the length of active service.  If you are a disabled Veteran, bring a COPY of your preference letter from the U.S. Veteran's Administration with you when you apply.  The letter must be dated within the last six (6) months and must specify the rating of service-connected disability.  The Civil Service Office must be able to keep all copies of DD-214's and preference letters that are submitted.  If you do not have your DD-214 or preference letter at the time of application, please bring it with you to the written examination.  If you are unable to locate your discharge papers, please contact the Lucas County Veterans' Service Office at 213-6090.

DATE AND PLACE OF WRITTEN TEST:  The written test for Fire Fighter is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29,  2008.  Due to the number of applicants anticipated, the test will only be given on this date.  If you want to take the test, you must be able to take it on the scheduled day.  The test site is SeaGate Centre, 401 Jefferson Avenue, Toledo, Ohio
